I'm a newbie and don't have a cold enough basement or garage to properly store plants over the winter. Instead, I kept them inside near the windows, in containers. The geranium stems are now fairly tall and thick. If I repot them with new potting soil will they grow/bloom nicely in planter boxes this year, or should I be taking clippings to grow new plants and discarding the old plant?

    thanks.

Cut them back a bit and plant them. You could try to root your cuttings also ...dip in rootone and put in a potting mix. Good luck.

Cut them back to 12-15 centimeters above the pot. Take the
tips and use 10 -15 centimeter cuttings to make the tip cuttings.
the rootone is a rooting hormon that really helps. You need to
have no leaves on the lower portion of the cutting, just strip those
off. I put them in dampened perlite. Check from time to time
when they have roots plant them up. You will keep watering the
mother plants in the window and keep the perlite damp. After the
the cuttings are rooted and planted up you will have more Geraniums than you ever wanted or knew you wanted. ;-)
