My walking group saw this shrub today. It seemed about 6 feet tall, mostly upright branches, with yellow flowers maybe 2-3 cm across, 6 petals. One person said forsythia, which is supposed to have four petals, and one said jasmine, which is supposed to have 5 petals. I didn't notice any fragrance, but that doesn't mean there wasn't any. Any ideas? There actually was a posting titled 'yellow flower, six petals', but that was something totally different.
Yes, it does look like Jasminum nudiflorum. Thanks, Chimera. That does indeed show 6 petals on wikipedia. The wikipedia article says flowers are 1cm across. I really think they were at least twice that size, but I know these things aren't that exact. The problem was that my query on yellow jasmine brought up "Yellow Jasmine or Jessamine (Gelsemium sempervirens)", which is what has the five petals.
Try this link Wendy. Size of flowers match yours description. Jasminum nudiflorum is a very common winter flowering shrub this side of the pond. http://www.plantoftheweek.org/week447.shtml
