To give you an idea of what can be grown around Edmonton, I suggest two things: 1) Visiting the Devonian Botanic Garden 2) Browsing through the catalogue of Jeffries Nursery - excellent info in the catalogue about the plants. Zone 2 will certainly work, some of the zone 3s depend on your local microclimatic situation.
acer Rubrum=red maple many cultivar avaible(i have october Glory)Scanlon etc. Quercus rubra =red oak,if you have low ph is beautiful Splendens
Quercus mongolica (Mongolian Oak) is hardy to zone 3. I don't know about Z2, but U of North Dakota has trialed it and reports as being similar to Bur Oak in performance. There's a very nice specimen at the U of Minnesota arb that was planted in early 60's and is about 35'.
