I walk by this tree several times every summer and fall and I've never seen it flower or fruit. Today, holy smokes! some mystery fruit... a mutant cherry? the skin was very fragile and bruised easily, the flesh was peach-colored and had the consistency of an overripe peach. It didn't have any particular odor. Haven't seen anything like it around these parts. Any help would be appreciated.

    Cornus kousa.

The fruit is edible, varies a bit from specimen to specimen, some are really delicious, others are a bit bland and floury-textured.
