This is our second year in this house. We have no idea what kind of tree is that. It did not bloom at all last Spring and now it came out with those beautiful magenta blooms. Can anyone tell me what kind of tree is that?
They are all edible, though not necessarily worth eating, since they are small and usually sour. They can be processed for canning or pickling.
Edible when cooked, but not raw. They make very nice jam/jelly. Otherwise, leave them for birds to eat.
Last autumn I repeated a tree ID class at the local college to get some CEUs. Every time we passed one crapapple on campus, I loaded my vest pockets and scarfed them down as we made our rounds. That one was every bit as sweet as any apple in a produce department. I tend to like the tart ones too - but just a couple at a time. That's a pretty nicely shaped tree in your photo, by the way.
