When I was given this plant I was told it was a cactus. I've looked all over the internet and can't find an image of this and from what I have found now I don't even know if this is a cactus. Can someone tell me what this is.

It's a monstrously leggy Aloe (so a succulent, but not a cactus). Maybe A. arborescens, judging by leaf shape. Was it always that stringy looking? Have you been keeping it in the dark?

Yes it's always been like this and no not in the dark. Has been on my desk in front of those windows in the picture since last June. There were maybe only 4 'leaves' when I got it and now it needs to be tied to a stake. The taller it gets the more top heavy it gets. My s-i-l that gave it to me had several of them in pots on her front porch. There is a baby plant shooting up next to this one and I'm sure I need to transplant it but want to know if it should be cut and start a new plant or staked to keep it standing up.

Thanks for helping me try to identify it. I can attach a better picture if that would help. I couldn't find anything like it online.
