We just moved in and there are two of these in the front yard. Unfortunately, I think, one of them is over the septic tank.
Thanks. Does it have a long tap root? Or big roots that will bust into the septic tank it was planted over? How, when, and how much do I prune the limbs that begin to sag to the ground? Obviously, I need to learn a lot to care for them properly. Thanks for your patience.]
Like many Canary Island Dates this one is too close to the house and may damage your roof. The roots shouldn't be a problem for the septic unless it stops raining in Houston. Not Bloody likely :-) Prune the lower fronds as they become unsightly or if they threaten to take someone's eye out. HTH Chris
Chris, Good news on the roots over the septic. Although we have had a few droughts here. The palm looks closer in the picture than it actually is. It's about 8 ft from the foundation. The longest frond, if it's growing directly at the house just brushes the brick.
