My uncle died this past Tuesday and I got one of the plants from the funeral. I am not sure what kind of plant I have nor how to take care of it. It is still in the original pot...I know that I have to repot it, I just need to know what kind of plant that it is in order to take care of it. This plants means alot to me and I would be very upset if something happened to it! Can you please help me?? I have attached a photo of the plant that will hopefully help anyone identify the plant!!! Thanks Alot Monica Carter
Looks like a Schefflera arboricola. (Dwarf Schefflera). The "regular" Schefflera (actinophyla), also called the Queensland Umbrella Tree, can grow to 25 feet or higher. The arboricola will generally grow to 6-8 feet tall and 6 feet wide.
Monica, Schefflera arboricola or dwarf umbrella tree is a sub-tropical -tropical plant. Origin is South East Asia through to the Pacific Islands and three species in Australia. Family Araliaceae the ivy family. Do not tolerate frost. Will tolerate full sun and part shade. Fairly adaptable. Prefer a well drained moderately fertile soil with adequate moisture during periods of growth. Great indoor plant. Very tough and hardy in the right conditions. Remember DOES NOT LIKE FROST.
Re: What kind of plant do I have?? Are there any more suggestions on what kind of plant this may be?? I am just wanting to get several opinions because I will be very very upset if something happens to this plant. My uncle meant alot to me and my aunt made me promise to take care of this plant and that is exactly what I am going to do!! Thanks to everyone that has replied!!
it's definitely a schefflera! don't water too often and put it in a spot where it gets decent light - not full sun though unless it's morning sun and only for a couple of hours. you can basically neglect this plant and it'll get along just fine. do not water it too often - every 6 weeks will be more than enough!
Hey joclyn. Perhaps where you live that's how it is. Climatic conditions though vary from place to place. I don't know where monika lives so I gave her an overview of the plants requirements in relation to where it is indeginous, the sub-tropics and tropics.
no problem, ionrachtagh :) i commented based on her comment that it's still in the orgininal pot it came in. keeping it inside would make for less need for watering. if it is put outside in the warmer months, it would need more frequent watering.
