Hello board, I have a small shaded area in front of my townhouse that may get some diffused sunlight, but zero direct sun. I'd love a potted JM like Waterfall or Koto-no-Ito in there, but would love advice of what would work for shade.
I have Koto no ito in permanent dappled shade, it seems quite happy. In this years drought conditions the maples in the shade are the only ones that look half decent. I think many palmatums will work in similar conditions, but there's a table at the back of Japanese Maples (Vertrees/Gregory 4th Ed.) that proposes those that may be most successful. -E
As the others have said, green palmatums will be OK in shade, including decent fall colors. The main issue will be that growth may be irregular since the tree will grow towards the sun, in your case away from the porch. You will need to stake and prune to keep it in good, harmonious shape. Gomero
alexes first ghost is a good idea, i have a floating cloud and golden full moon that love shade, i also have a autumn moon that gets evening sun and is insanely happy (weird i know) keep us posted and post some pics when you get your trees!!
