Another plant to rehab. I thought it was a prayer plant at first, but now have my doubts. It looks like someone painted the pinkish stripes on all the leaves and they are more leathery than other prayer plants I've seen. I figure I'd better know what it is to have a clue as to what to do. It, as well as the others I'm "fixing" has a pretty good crop of mealy bugs so out comes the alcohol, and then new dirt, cleaned pot & fertilizer.

Ignore the cute little shamrock happily spreading it's self thru the rocks. ;)) barb

looks to be some type of aroid. colocasia or alocasia possibly - if it has a tuber, then most likely is one of those. might be an anthurium, though...there are quite a few that don't really look like the 'typical' anthurium.

might want to hold off repotting until steve, and whoever else is going, is back from the show and can give an id - wouldn't want to put it through the stress of repotting only to find you need to do it again if you pick the wrong soil type!!

it's VERY pretty!!! can't wait until it's id'd so i can go find one for myself!!

Thanks Joclyn, That was my thinking also. I will wait awhile. By Steve, do you mean Steve Lucas? I finally saw his Web page and it made me want to jump in the car and go take a look.
I know this plant has to be repotted due 2 the mealy bugs eventually, but I'll just play with the alcohol for now. Barb

saltcedar - I think you nailed it! The following discription sure fits.
"Calathea ornata has large, elliptical, dark green leaves with closely arranged, thin, pink lines that radiate from the mid rib. The underside of each leaf is maroon. Resembles Calathea majestica, except that Calathea ornata leaves are broader. Two common cultivars can be found on sale, namely, 'Roseo-lineata' and 'Sanderiana'. 'Sanderiana', shown left, is a bigger plant with broader, shorter leaves, which grows to a height of 1 m whereas 'Roseo-lineata' can grow only up to 60 cm. Unfortunately, the pink lines of Calathea ornata tend to fade as they mature."
And it is a form of Prayer plant! At least I was headed down the right road.;-)))) barb

oh, boy, i was way off, wasn't i?? thanks, saltcedar!!!

barb, it needs consistantly moist soil (like prayer plants)...so, you should be fine repotting it now that you know what it needs. not really the best time - still, if it needs it, it needs it!

and, yes, steve lucas. isn't his site 'da bomb' ?? i've learned so much from it!!! some day i hope to go visit and see it in person...i've sent him a couple plants, too & would be cool to see how they're doing...
