I call it an onion-thingy because you can smell onions when walking past them. The plant is about a foot high, the "flower" 2-3 inches long. Found in SW Ontario beside an old railroad. I'm pretty sure I've also seen them in a garden.

An onion thingy. There are hundreds of species and cultivars of onions, garlics etc. Inside the pointed hood will be flower buds or bulbils.
