Our new home has a older tree that looks like a lilac however it did not lose any leaves nor did they change color over the winter. Mid winter what looked like small clusters of lilac flower buds appeared eventually turning into tiny black/blue berries that are now dropping off. The tree appears healthy with new Lilac like branches growing up the main branches and the leaves look similar. I've never seen a lilac hold their leaves over the winter, however I should say so did half of our blueberries we planted last fall. We are quite sheltered by Bear mountain and on the lake so while Victoria proper had frosts, some as recent as two weeks ago we did not have one frost over the winter. We have four other Lilacs that behaved themselves but this one if that's what it is not so. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.
Some photos would help, of the tree, leaves, branching and the fruits. How to Attach Photos and other files
Lilacs do not produce berries. Except for your description of the appearance and timing of the flowering, the timing of the fruiting the prime candidate is Ligustrum japonicum.
