I have a multi trunk volunteer tree grwoing with in 12 inches of my foundation. It has small oval smooth edge not pinted leaves that are opposite several on a stem. it have bunches of white flowers in the sping similar to a lilac shape and it also has thorns. It seems to grow everywhere. I kill the small ones with weed killer. If I cut off a branch it wilts in minutes. I want to get rid of it but need a good reason.

A suckering rampant shrub 12" from the foundation of my house, would be a good enough reason for me to get rid of it ,no matter what it is. However, if you want an id a pic would really help, even just one of the leaf.

For some reason, that is only known to computers, I am unable to download a picture. May I say I would love to cut the tree down before it gets unmanageable for me to do.......but my significant other does not wish to cut down the tree as it provides shade to that side of the house...I am assuming at the expense of our foundation and brick sidewalk. I was hoping to find out it was some poisonous, pest magnet. I will just have to take a branch to the local landscaping facility. Thanks.

I have "sold" the idea of control of vegetation up against houses by muttering things like..."spiders, fleas, moths, ants, rodents, flies, mold, damp, green slime, shifting foundations, plugged drains, possums, roccoons, lizards, rot, fungus, werewolves..DO YOU KNOW WHAT THAT WILL COST TO FIX?". Shout the last bit as if in surprise at your own conclusion. Most folk get the idea eventually.

Werewolves? Where did that come from? Must be time for supper.

You have definately nailed it. I now have ammunition. We are planning a family tree cutting. Although the "sig" will not actually look at the pictures, I now have something to backup my concerns so that it is not just nagging. Thank you so much for all of your help and probably a lot of work searching out this tree. You have no idea how valuable this information is to me. I have been on many websites with no satifaction. This is wonderful. The neighbor has one growing in his yard too in a similarly weird place. I think we will cut that one down too.I was actually going to resort to killing the tree before spring. Thought it might be too obvious the tree mysteriosly dies..... Once again thank you for your help.

I really do like the werewolf idea. It might have worked. " What was that noise? Oh my gosh you see what that tree did. Now we have werewolves. I told you, Black Locust, it is not good.

glass brain, Just love your sense of humour.

gj1814. The reason for the 2 hour delay in posting, was that for the first time in MONTHS we had a beautiful DRY,sunny warm day here in South Wales, so were busy in the garden. Wonderful!
As soon as I saw your pics, along with your description, it was very clear what tree you had. I was just chuffed that I could get in to post an answer. The amazing folk that use this site are so quick that often posts get answered in minutes!
You have definitly reached the right decision.Glad this UBC site solved you query.

We here in Nebraska aslo had a sunny dry day after many days of rain and clouds. You could see the fence was still wet with the morning shower. Now today a cold front is moving in and I will have to mow the lawn in my long underwear. Should have done that yesterday. We will need to plant a schrub, that does not attract werewolves, in the spring and you can bet that I will be consulting this site first. I have solved many a yard problem on my own but this one had me stumped, so to speak.
