We recently moved, and there's a beautiful (and very fragrant) tree on the side of the house. I have no idea how old the tree is, but it's about 8 or 9 feet tall and has beautiful light pink flowers that look very similar to honeysuckle. They smell heavenly (but nothing like honeysuckle). At the tip of each branch, there is a cluster of 8 - 10 flowers, and there are very few leaves on the tree--it's mostly flowers. It started blooming about 2 - 3 weeks ago (I live in Georgia). Does ANYONE know what this is? I'd love to plant more, because it smells so nice! Well, I tried to post a reply, but it's not showing up. Here's a link: http://img15.imageshack.us/gal.php?g=pict0016uxg.jpg (and it does look a lot like a rhododendrom canescens. I didn't know rhododendrons smelled so nice!
Could you please post a pic. That will ensure you get the correct id for your tree. Could it possibly be Rhododendron canescens? The flowers do look a little like honeysuckle. See.... http://books.google.com/books?id=Vc...eVqOgX&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=4
Sorry--had to get my bum of a husband to find our camera (that he lost! lol) Here's a link to a few pictures (Sorry about the quality--it's REALLY sunny and windy here!) http://img15.imageshack.us/gal.php?g=pict0016uxg.jpg
Glad the mystery has been solved! There are named cultivars of Rhododendron canescens. See... http://images.google.com/images?q=r...1I7SUNA_en-GB&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wi
