i recently noticed that two trees in my back yard are producing berries. they start green, then pink/red and then turn dark purple, almost black. they look like blackberries but there on a tree not a bush. i would like to know what it is and if its dangerous if my neices and nephew eat it. if it helps the leaves are simple oval.

In other words, not toxic, actually a food tree. Munch away!

Yup, sounds an awful lot like a Mulberry to me. You can pull up a search and compare what you find with what you have to determine the species, size, requirements &c.
