What is this terrible looking thing on the corn stalk.

    I was out in the garden today and saw this large cocoon like growth on one of our corn stalks. Freaked me right out, I pulled the whole stalk out of the garden. Does anyone know what it is.. It sure is ugly.

    Thank you so much. I looked it up online and it shows it is a delicacy from some.. I don't think I would want to eat it.
