I bought this plant and it had a tag in it that said it was a "Pilea" but I'm not finding any pictures of any Pilea that match this plant. The leaves come in red speckled, then as the leaf ages it turns to pink and eventually white on the oldest leaves. Any clue what it is? It looks a lot like a polka dot plant, but the leaves change colors. Thanks in advance.
That's what I thought, except that it would seem that the polka dot plants come in the color they are, whether that is pink, red or white and do not change colors. This one, with all its different colored leaves are all the same plant. The leaves come in one color and change color as the leaf ages. Do you think it is still that variety?
It sure looks like Hypoestes. There appear to be several plants in the pot. It also appears that there are pink and red plants with leaves from small to large and mature. I think I see a small white spotted leaf as well. Are you sure they are changing color?
Well, it's still Hypoestes regardless of what the colors are doing, but it's most likely that there are multiple seedlings planted together in the pot, of varying colors, and each seedling is producing its own color of leaves. Individual plants aren't particularly full, so multiple-seedling pots are how the plant is usually sold. If you have a single individual where there are different colors of leaves coming off of the same stem, then it's possible that it's trying to revert to a different coloration, as white-variegated leaves on other plants will sometimes revert to solid green leaves. I would be surprised if that's what's happening, but I suppose it's not impossible. My guess, though, is that you have a number of tightly-packed seedlings, each producing leaves spotted in red, pink, or white.
I believe you guys are right, that it is several different Hypoestes plants put together in the same plant that are different colors. I was just not looking at it closely enough. Thank you soo much for your help. Glad to know what it is. Any growing tips on this plant?
The white one is Hypoestes white splash and the red one is Hypoestes phyllostachya 'Red Splash' and the pink one is Hypoestes Sanguinolenta Pink Polka Dot.
And also, you need to trim it or it will become straggly. I replace mine annually Several to a pot and different varieties together. The word "pilea" you said before is a totally different plant. I like the variety of your hypoestes! ;)
