What is this plant?

    I received this plant (in a hanging basket) as a gift a few months back but I have no idea what it is. A friend of mine said it was a type of a begonia but I don't think so.
    I was hoping to over winter it in the house, though I would really like to know if I could plant it in the garden.

    Yup, that's a Begonia all right. Begonia rex, a tuberous type, is the parent species of most of the flashy-leaved cultivars like the one in your picture.
