Identification: What is this Plant?

    I've had these plants in my family for years. When the main one gets too big we just just cut off one of the babies that grow around the base and start a whole new plant.

    I once took some babies down to Puerto Rico, where it's sub tropical and planted them in big pots outside of the house. They grew to enourmous sizes..almost prehistoric looking.. with big thick roots that grew down the sides and went into the earth and big spines along the long leaves..pretty amazing..

    Anyone have any ideas. What is this species? It kinda reminds me of a pineapple.

    A Yucca of some sort would be my best guess.

    thanks for the info Saltcedar... I think you hit the nail on the head. The plants that I took To Puerto Rico aren't nearly as large as some of the specimens that I've seen on the internet (thanks to you) but at least now I know what to look forward to.... they are beautiful.
