I was given an old plant that has been in the same pot for several years. It had been kept where there was not a lot of light. I brought it home just a few days ago. I'm trying to figure out what it is. The person who gave it to me thought it was some kind of ivy. I've always thought it might be a pothos. Someone else thought it was a philodendron. I've looked in my gardening books, and I've searched the internet. I've found pictures of pothos that seem to look like what I have. It has mostly green leaves, with a few splashes of yellow or yellowish color. I've included two pictures of it. Can someone tell me what this is? I would like to give this plant a "make-over". I want to prune it so that it will have more leaves around the base, and I want to find a nice ceramic pot to put it in.
Yep, Epipremnum aureum, or pothos. You can cut off all the vines to a few inches, and root sections of the vines for new plants. After all this time, it could use some new, fast draining soil (not big box store potting mix). You'll find lots of references on these boards to potting mixes for aroids. If you find the variegated leaves more appealing, then specifically root those vine ends that show it. My experience and questions to the recently deceased Steve Lucas (photopro on here) indicate that an aroid plant that has gone back to solidly green is not likely to return to variegation. More sun/light, improved fast draining soil mix, and frequent watering will make a big difference in the vigor of the plant. OTOH, you could leave it like this with sporadic water and indifferent care and it will still probably live another twenty years plus.
