Hello. I live in Mission BC in a forest area. I found this growing on my climbing rose. Looks like moss but not sure.
As these moss galls are typical of Rosa rubiginosa I wonder if your "climbing" rose is that one or a related species instead of a true climbing rose. Or if your climbing rose is grafted onto one of these and you don't realize you are hosting root stock suckers. In your picture it looks like the shoot may belong to the thorn less R. canina root stock cultivar used by at least one Canadian rose grower.
Thanks for your help. It is a Rosa Rubiginosa. I went out and checked the description. I cut off the gall and put it in the trash.
If it is that one the stems should have a lot of fish hook like prickles and the foliage should be emitting an apple or otherwise fruity aroma during summer. This can be noticeable from some distance during its peak effectiveness.
