Here in Lake Forest, California, we've had drizzle and rain for a few days. Next to my work is a nice nature park full of oaks and sycamores. I spotted this fuzzy bunch next to a couple of mushrooms. Any ideas what it is?

While we're at this, can anyone recommend a mushroom I.D. for my area of Southern California? Thanks!

Interesting! Would you be able to post a photo of the underside of one of these things?

Also wondering whether they are growing from buried wood.

    cheers,

Indeed, it does appear to be growing from a small buried stump. Every probe I made under it met with stiff resistance.

Furthermore, the fungi itself is surprisingly firm, contrary to its soft appearance.

Tough to get good photos with my cell phone, but if the rain keeps up I think I'll bring along my pocket camera to get better shots of future subjects.

I'm thinking it may be Split Gill Schizophyllum commune, but I can't quite tell from the photo of the underside if it has those characteristic paired gills or not.
