Thanks for your replay. Like you say, might be. Has a lot of the look, but in googling Verbascum images I found prickly stalks but none with prickles back of the petals.
I just didn't know what to call them, so . . . I found glandular hairs on stalks but none with glandular hairs on the back of the petals. If you happen upon any of my previous posts, you'll see I know almost nothing about identifying flowers.
Can friend send a picture of the plant?? Can you see how much easier it would be to know if it's a mullein (Verbascum) or not if you knew what the plant looked like? The plants are pretty distinctive-looking, and having to identify it from a photo of one flower is like a trick question. Tipularia should get a "Like" on that one! It's a great photo, though. That said, I found a pretty convincing photo, this of Verbascum thapsus: Common mullein (Verbascum thapsus) | Identify that Plant

Just for interest...do have a look at Brian Johnstons amazing series of images here... Micscape Microscopy and Microscope Magazine
Verbascum blattaria - it differs from V. virgatum by longer pedicels and glabrous leaves (not seen in the photo). Compare these two: V. blattaria (2016.06.11_10.03.05_IMG_6462) V. virgatum (2014.07.04_09.00.34_IMG_9418)
Ah - I missed the LINK in Tipularia's note! I know it said link, but that somehow didn't say "link" to me. It's mostly really good the way pasted links resolve to some useful phrase these days. +*+ Wendy
