Hello What would this bud with the stick insect on it be, from the cloud forest in Venezuela? A bromeliad?

    Many thanks

I think it's some Zingiberaceae, not bromeliad, could be a Costus sp.

Bromeliads produce leaves in basal rosettes.

That's one of the wild gingers....

Alpinia purpurata in bud, maybe? It's native to Malaysia but it's naturalized in Ecuador, so I don't see why it wouldn't also have done so in Venezuela. We use it here as a sweeter, less piquant ginger root for cooking.

Could also be Costus guanaiensis, now that I'm riffling through the tropical databases.
