This leafy, low-growing plant seems to be popping up in clumps in one of my flower beds. I do not know if it is something special, planted by the previous owner (who was a very good gardener), or just some sort of weed. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Paul

Probably Tovara virginiana 'Painter's Palette'. Whichever specific kind it is, it would usually have been planted intentionally in this area - unless coming in from a neighboring property.

You are liable to see it described under more than one genus name, as it is a type of knotweed and the botanical placement of these has been getting tossed around lately.
