This clematis is called Multi Blue and I think it is one of the most beautiful.

Thanks, Diane. I tried to e/m you, but the site wouldn't let me. I just knew you would respond! I'm new to Clematis, and will have several next year! I did nothing to winter this over- mulched is all. Should I cut it to the ground level?

No, do not cut it down to the ground, as it flowers on old wood and you would not get any flowers next year. It belongs to pruning group 2. After it has flowered in summer, cut the stems back by 8-10'' and it will flower again later. If it is an old plant and has become untidy, you will have to be more drastic and cut the whole vine back to about 3ft. from the ground. You will not get too many flowers the first year after you do this but after that it will flower more profusely.
I mulch my clematis heavily in the fall with a mixture of compost and manure.
I hope you enjoy growing Clematis as much as I do. They are very easy to grow and not at all as difficult as many people believe. They are almost impossible to kill, even if neglected.

    Diane.
