This is my hedge, which in some places is wonderfully mixed with oregon grape and salal. When I went to trim it recently, I found the leaves full of tiny holes, quite symmetrical. There is no part of the hedge which is not affected. The salal and oregon grape are intact. Is there anything I can do? It is an old hedge (50 years +) and has probably never been fertilized. Should I throw down some sea soil, give it a boost? I'm assuming insects but can't see any. I also wouldn't mind knowing what the hedge is, if that's possible from my very bad pictures. Thanks.

I am seeing weavil damage. You can get nematodes in the early spring to control them if they are actually living in the root zone of the hedge.

I appears you also have wasps taking chunks of your plant for their homes.

The circles are more than likely a shot hole fungus. Probably from all of the rain we had.

What is the hedge planted next to? A sidewalk or driveway? The porous nature of hard surfaces will harbour the infection and may also need to be treated.

I am not certain what type of shrub this is.

The site hasn't let me write any responses over the weekend. I guess others had the same problem.
I'll let those with non-toxic control methods or solutions add to this.
