What is a sucker, and what isn't?

    I hope this works...

    In the photos below I have tried to illustrate what I believe to be the union between the scion and the rootstock. I am sure you will agree that this tree was neglected.

    It looks to me that much of the growth is coming from the actual union of the rootstock and scion. Is there any way to tell which is, and which isn't a sucker?

    Secondly, I have a friend with a fabulous tree that produces very sweet Navel Oranges... is it possible to get a cutting from his tree and graft it onto this rootstock?

    If so, where would I get detailed instructions?

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    It is hard to tell from the pictures-- are the leaves different on the lower shoots?
