getting new little gifts from friends and family who've caught on to my new interest in cacti.
this one was received three weeks ago, just kind of laying in the dry dirt. I added dirt, gave it a sprinkle, and checked it last week.
There was new root growth from the top of the tuber, and i covered it back up, believing it would be fine (even though I had not identified it yet).

I checked two days ago, and now LOOK!!

What happened to it? I keep all my succulents under the same 4" ballast, so I'm concerned about the health of my other cacti.

    1) what is it?
    2) what could have caused so much damage, so quickly?
    3) can I take cuttings? Plant the top , or burn it?

    thanks to all!!

    "monstrosa"

Oops, sorry, "monstruosa" is correct (but "monstrosa" is more common).

    Thank you so much!
It's been fighting a valiant fight....
I'll cut it clean, & see how she goes.
