We transplanted a black walnut to our front yard for it's shade. The tree is lovely and the shade very lacey. I've read that the walnut gives off an oil or something that deters the growth of most plants under it. In that portion of the beds we've been able to keep astible, lamium, coral bells and ornamental strawberry plants as ground cover. We would like to have splashes of colour in that area and would like any suggestions as to what would tolerate these conditions. The area is fairly moist and shaded. I have lots of bleeding hearts and hostas and would like something else.

Can anyone tell me how to harvest the nuts?.. if I can get them before the squirrels!

    Thanks~

I don't know if it can handle your zone, but Spicebush, Lindera benzoine, seems to do well under black walnut.
