I am new to dealing with peonies. Last year I took some from my grandma's garden and tried planting them. Not much happened and i thought they were dead. Today, I just noticed pointy red shoots coming up around the dead ones. There's a good number of them- maybe ten. Are they back or is that another plant or weed?
    Thanks, Erica

That's probably them, and later they will look like the picture on the right but in colour.

Paeonia delavayi (photo of the day) is a tree form, or rather, a sparsely branched shrub, growing about 6 ft. tall. Your sprouts are more likely herbaceous.

sounds like a peony to me :) they do resent disturbance so it may not do very much for a while........and dont plant too deeply or they will not flower.

When I moved I slowly dug up a peony tree which I loved and just could not leave behind. It did not bloom the first year but looks like it is coming along now.
Have several other peony plants throughout the yard. Be sure to cut them back a few inches to the ground in the fall, they will come back bigger and better each year, they don't last long but you will sure enjoy them.
