I have this canna plant in Summerland, BC and found this row of holes in the leaf. It has me stumped as to the cause. I'm interested that:

    - they gradually diminish in size from left to right
    - they are in a relatively straight line
    - the rest of the leaf is untouched

The only explanation I can think of is that a hummingbird caused it but I can't see a reason for it.

If anyone can help figure this out for me I'd really appreciate it

    Thanks,

    Ross

How about this? Canna leaves are rolled up in their immature state, and unfurl as they mature. A bug chewed on the rolled-up canna leaf and got through several layers in the roll before deciding canna leaves didn't taste good and quit. The canna unfurled its leaf later (from left to right), and voila!

Works for me. How about you? :-)

Hey, I think you're probably right in that. It makes good sense considering the holes get smaller as they move across the leaf.

    Thanks so much, Keke.

i'd agree with Keke ---- excellent response.
I know there are lots of Cannas around Penticton public areas etc - do any others have holes - and like this? (your photo)

Thanks for the reply, Georgia Strait. I haven't noticed any other cannas with the same pattern of holes in the Okanagan area. I have 3 plants of my own and our renter downstairs has a couple, none of which have similar holes so the actual perpetrator has not been identified yet but I'll keep my eyes and ears open for clues.

    Thanks for the interest.
    Ross
