Re: Prolific Morning Glory. Field Bindweed?

Put in some poles or canes for the vines to climb up away from your treasured plants, spray or paint with glyphosate (Roundup), repeat.

Alternatively make a hole or slit in the lid of a clear container, fill with glyphosate, unwind some vines and place in the container, replace lid, and leave for 24 hours or more so that a large quantity of glyphosate is absorbed. (Not to be left where kids are around or where there is a chance of the container being knocked over.) Then carefully remove the vine and move on to the next one.

Hope that helps. Whatever you do it will be difficult to eradicate it entirely.

Stupid question: is bindweed a perennial or does it have to reseed each year ? That is if I can eradicate it one year will it possibly reseed, will I have to dead head also?

It comes back from the roots and can also seed, so you need to remove everything you can as frequently as you can. I just keep pulling all the vines away and eventually the roots die (after a couple years).

I use a two-pronged approach. Early season I use the glyphosate method in the hope of killing the roots, but once the plants I have missed (there are always some with bindweed) enter the flowering stage I switch to the vine-pulling method to prevent reseeding.
