While fishing the Yellowstone River yesterday in the vicinity of Big Timber, Montana, I noticed a plant with strangely vertical leaves, and when I saw another with clusters of brown burs, I supposed it to be a Common Cocklebur (Xanthium strumarium). However, in looking up the Xanthium strumarium, I find the leaves very different.
What is it that I have photographed?

If you're ever back fishing in the area (and it is permissible to collect seed), we wouldn't mind trying that species out in UBC Botanical Garden...

    Many thanks.
I doubt I will be heading back there this year, but will keep my eyes open in the event I do. I would like to photograph it next year while in bloom.
