Something is eating my lettuce and other vegetables. It was raining earlier today and I found tons of these on my lettuce. Can someone help identify them for me? Any suggestions on getting rid of them?
    thanks!

They seem to wait until the heads are mature and then gobble them up in a matter of days, as though the lettuce plant contains a repellent that diminishes after a certain level of development is attained. I have grown some nice, pristine heads only to have them ravaged soon after sizing up. Recently I heard someone else making a similar complaint.

I thought it might be slugs because I've found snails in the backyard, but they didn't look like slug photos I've seen. thank you for your replies!!

Yeah, that's their resting shape; they assume the classic slug profile when they move. Keep your eyes open whenever you move something that has been standing for a while in the yard - a bucket or whatever - and you will probably find these blobs under them quite often.
