I extended my cedar hedge last summer and the new plants did well over the winter (well drained next to our ditch) but over this summer have all accumulated several small (1cm di) golden cones while staying relatively green underneath. I assume the cones have come out due to stress, but I'm not sure what to do about them. Any ideas?

Maybe they were raised from cuttings and therefore have the sexual maturity of the clone, as opposed to seed-raised plants that usually have to be a certain age before they are likely to produce them. Stress problems would be dealt with by providing good conditions. This frequently seen species is mostly not very fussy about soil in its native region but needs a moist one to produce an attractive specimen.
