I planted a hedge of 3 foot tall western red cedar last March (2009) in Comox, on Vancouver Island. The soil was typical rocky forest soil with little organic material present. I planted the trees directly into the soil without any organics added; I didn't think the red cedars would be fussy about the soil. I made sure that the trees got lots of water through direct hand watering and a drip line that ran for hours every day. As of now September 2009 the hedge is doing find in some parts and poorly in other areas. Some trees are turning red with little growth while others are bright green and flourishing. There is no pattern to the poorly developing trees; they are often next to those that are flourishing. I'm thinking that the grower may have done a poor job of digging some of the trees resulting in insufficient root structures in some trees. When I pulled the trees from their original pots some had little root structure and western red roots do not set a lot of fiber to begin with. Any suggestions.
