Yes, it's the only one of the three 'Autumnalis Rosea' that remains now - you can see the stumps of the other two in your photo, on the other side of the path. This year was the best it has ever looked. I'm sure I've written somewhere that this cultivar never provides a splash of colour, but this year they did, both here and at the Pacific Heights Co-op. These are from March 27 And at Pacific Heights Co-op. The one 'Whitcomb' set back from the street looked particularly good this year too. Thanks for reminding me to post these!
A group of 3 very upright Cherry trees in a garden bed, at Lost Lagoon, close to day care going towards the washrooms. The flowers are too far away to see details, other than they seem to be pink, and the branches seem to be thick and gnarly.......and maybe diseased? They could be Rancho too, but that one I think blooms maybe a bit later??
Yes, no - They are 'Rancho', and the ones on Davie Street had noticeable flowers when I went by three days ago, I was going to say on the bus, but I see that I was driving.
The tunnel of Akebono at the end of Chilco just as you head into Stanley Park are just about to burst, pics taken on Saturday April 1. No one was there yet!
Several 'Akebono' in the West End are already looking very white. It's impossible to get the blooming dates right on the map.
'Yae-beni-shidare' blooming now at Thurlow and Barclay. The ito-zakura behind it is finished for the season.
Where IS everybody? The weather wasn't nearly as bad as had been predicted. There was no wind, it wasn't freezing, and the rain was not close to torrential. Only 25 or so came out for my walk, though on two sites where it was posted, the combined number booked was 60 with at least 40 on the waiting list. It was actually more fun with @Laura Blumenthal leading it with me, instead of breaking out to a separate walk.
Here is a nice 'Akebono' on Beach Avenue across from English Bay at Cardero. I must have passed it hundreds of times, but I noticed the trunk while driving by today (no, I am not a good driver) and went back for an n-hundred and one-th look. I suppose some landscape person was paid to plant that pine so close to the cherry, which is really a shame for such a shapely and seemingly ungrafted (or low-grafted) cherry.
Here are way too many photos of two of the three young 'Yae-beni-shidare' at the apartment building on the corner of Cardero and Burnaby. These appeared in a year the VCBF was selling them, so I always thought that was the source of these. This should have been given the name "moonlight on pine trees", which name went to 'Shogetsu'. This is my "artist" series.
Speaking of 'Shogetsu', the one on Pantages lane, a half block north of the trees in the previous posting, does not yet even have white buds. People don't usually photograph flowers at this bud stage, and these were at eye level. But right next to it is the Korean hill cherry in full bloom.
Some daffodils are still in bud in the West End, yet these two 'Ama-no-gawa' on Beach and Nicola are well on their way - Stage 4, with a few blossoms at Stage 5 already.
Posting #187 in 2011: Posting #518 in 2020: This tree has been removed. I liked it very much, and I'm very sad.
There is an 'Umineko/Shirotae' sandwich on Pendrell Street, east of Cardero. Two 'Umineko' with a 'Shirotae' in the middle. 'Umineko are showing red eye, 'Shirotae' are not.
'Takasago' and 'Mikuruma-gaeshi' just appeared in time for my Easter Parade walk on April 9, and now they're past their prime. There were a few fresh-looking flowers on this 'Takasago' on Cardero at Barclay. From any distance, these trees have looked excellent this year, densely flower-covered, but close-up, it's hard to find photos without evidence of brown rot. 'Mikuruma-gaeshi' used to run from Thurlow to Stanley Park, but all the ones east of Denman were removed several years ago. I still miss the one in front of my building. They have a similar shape to 'Takasago', but are not as densely flowered.
