i know map states 3 Akebono, but the middle one, that is in the hedge, had more witches broom. i didn't see a petaloid and i did see petaloid on the other 2. could it be a Somei-yoshino? the middle one in the last picture is the larger one that i am wonderin if it could be Somei Yoshino. to the right of the Japanese Memorial monument.

The Ojochin at the Japanese memorial is just starting to come out. You can really see the buds do look like paper lanterns. 'Ojochin' means large paper lantern (Douglas Justice book) I think Douglas also said that these trees are memorial trees and the lanterns will guide the spirits home. Such beautiful imagery for such a beautiful tree.

poor Takasago. Blossoms looked lovely, but the poor tree looking gawky. Blooms were quite high up.

The Korean Hill Cherry in Pantages Lane off Cardero is in bloom now.

Down the block at Burnaby Street are three 'Yae-beni-shidare'. They had a lot of rootstock growth at the top, but it was finally removed.

Acerholic was commenting on Anne Eng's posting of an 'Ama-no-gawa' in the posting at Grandview-Woodland.
Here is what I think is a lovely planting of a pair of 'Ama-no-gawa', in full bloom now, at one of our more elegant apartment buildings (now a condo), across from the beach. These were planted five years ago - you can see what they looked like then at West End / Stanley Park.

The pair of 'Ichiyo' (almost always planted in pairs) on Cardero just south of Davie are in bloom.

Here is the row of 'Snow Goose' in Ceperley Meadow. The ones at the south end are not doing well at all. Maybe it's too wet in this meadow? The ones in the middle are doing the best. Beavers only took two, at the north end.
    SnowGoose_CeperleyMeadow_Cutler_20210416_155520.jpg SnowGoose_CeperleyMeadow_Cutler_20210416_155608.jpg SnowGoose_CeperleyMeadow_Cutler_20210416_155615.jpg SnowGoose_CeperleyMeadow_Cutler_20210416_155712.jpg

There are two or three (I can't remember or even tell how many I've photographed here - 1st two are the same tree) just inside the golf course are doing better in size, though they have some witches' broom.

Your Prunus Snow Goose are in full flush of blossom, whereas mine are going over very quickly now. But perhaps the harsh frosts are making quie a difference.
Golf course and Cherry blossom, now I like that a lot Wendy. Together with a beautiful blue sky, could be the meaning of heaven for me, lol.

No, they're really almost finished. I just looked for some flowers that didn't look all withered.

I was telling @Willard how much fun it must be to keep finding new trees, which reminded me that I just found a new one, a 'Snofozam' just acquired by its building last month. It's a very unhairy specimen at this point, but it has its tag still attached and that is what it looks like. It has a very nice structure, though, not top grafted. This is on Barclay near Lagoon Dr. The leaves are sort-0f double-serrated, not hair-tipped.
    Snofozam_BarclayLagoonDr_Cutler_20210417_161312.jpg Snofozam_BarclayLagoonDr_Cutler_20210417_160948.jpg Snofozam_BarclayLagoonDr_Cutler_20210417_161010.jpg Snofozam_BarclayLagoonDr_Cutler_20210417_161040.jpg
    Snofozam_BarclayLagoonDr_Cutler_20210417_161328.jpg

Not far away, on Haro at Chilco, is a 'Sendai-shidare' for comparison, very nicely left to drape to the ground. The lack of hairs on this should be a distinguishing feature, but it's not in this case because the 'Snofozam' seems equally glabrous, at least in my photos. These leaves are hair-tipped, and the flowers are stiffer than on the 'Snofozam'. I always thought the the twisted limbs were grafted on these, but on this specimen that's not the case - there is a branch growing from the trunk that is the same.
    Sendai-shidare_HaroChilco_Cutler_20210416_144250.jpg Sendai-shidare_HaroChilco_Cutler_20210416_144309.jpg Sendai-shidare_HaroChilco_Cutler_20210416_144337.jpg Sendai-shidare_HaroChilco_Cutler_20210416_144344.jpg Sendai-shidare_HaroChilco_Cutler_20210416_144404.jpg

This row of four 'Akebono' are getting large enough to go on the map. They are nicely spaced, should be getting impressive soon.

I want to get these posted so that @Janice Lin knows they are in bloom.
This is the 'Gyoiko', the one from which the cuttings were taken for the 'Gyoiko' in the Peter Wharton Cherry Grove at UBCBG. That tree had only a few flowers open yesterday.
    Gyoiko_StanleyPark-at-MaintenanceYdEntrance_Cutler_20210422_172011.jpg Gyoiko_StanleyPark-at-MaintenanceYdEntrance_Cutler_20210422_172025.jpg Gyoiko_StanleyPark-at-MaintenanceYdEntrance_Cutler_20210422_172040.jpg Gyoiko_StanleyPark-at-MaintenanceYdEntrance_Cutler_20210422_172212.jpg Gyoiko_StanleyPark-at-MaintenanceYdEntrance_Cutler_20210422_172222.jpg Gyoiko_StanleyPark-at-MaintenanceYdEntrance_Cutler_20210422_172247.jpg

Inside the golf course, sort of nearby, I saw only one similar tree. The area has obviously been cleared, and we were told that these trees would be kept, but I think there is only one (of three??). This tree is not as droopy, so it's harder to get photos or examine the flowers closely.

went back to visit the Japanese Memorial and found this grove of Shirofugen. You can really see the green elephants tusk in the centre, and the lovely bronze new leaves. as we were having our picnic lunch of fish and chips close to these trees, we heard the sea lions burping away at the aquarium just in behind the memorial....

Thanks. It is an amazing cherry and we just happened upon it as I didn't' realize it was there. BTW I thought of you when we saw some of the new maples coming out into leaf. I have no idea which one this is, but you may enjoy it. Hope you get out to enjoy your spring soon. actually they are 2 different maples, but the red one was such a fresh red I had to send it too.

Very hard to tell Lisa, but many thanks for posting them as they are beautiful. Love the way you caught the sun through the leaves.
I think Spring has now arrived here in England, so we will start to enjoy it as you are in Vancouver.
    Thankyou again.

Along the path next to Stanley Park are two old quite large Sargent Hybrid trees that have been posted here more than once. At Park Lane, the next road over, near the heronry, are two of these trees that are much younger. This is not a timely posting - photos are from April 8, 12 and 16. The first photo is one of the older trees.

Three is a small grove of Accolade on the east side of Chilco between Nelson St and Henshaw Ln in West End. The cherry threes are completely bare now. I spotted a branch in full bloom yesterday when I was walking southbound on the west side of the street and looking back toward Nelson. The flowers become very visible when they are against a dark background. There is a pine tree there to help you. I have never seen cherry blossom this early. Thanks Wendy for identifying the cultivar.

Thanks, Steven! I was sure I had never seen flowers on those in November, but I see that @Willard posted one in October 2016 and October 2015! It really helps to know those trees, so I can say for certain that they are not 'Autumnalis Rosea', which do normally have some flowers now. I did notice flowers on the 'Autumnalis Rosea' at the Pacific Heights co-op from across the street a week or so ago. Willard, not worth a trip. :)

If you want to see the previous October photos from the 'Accolade' trees on Chilco, they're at
    West End / Stanley Park
