My family and I live in North Carolina, and we have a tree out back that produces the weirdest looking fruit (if you can call it that). It's like round, bright green pods with harder, spiky black things inside. They smell kinda citrus-y. This tree literally LITTERS our yard with them--there are TONS. We thought it might be a chestnut tree, but after doing some research, I found out that it's not. Anyway, we have no idea what kind of tree it is, and I'm just wondering if anyone might have an idea. It's really strange. We don't dislike it, we just would like to know what kind of tree it is.
Might it be Maclura pomifera? Common name Osage orange. This has a citrus smell and has very strange fruit. http://images.google.com/images?hl=...era+&btnG=Search+images&aq=f&oq=&aqi=&start=0 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maclura_pomifera
That's funny SS because for some reason that is the first thing that came to my mind, tho I've never even seen one. And had no idea of the smell. It's comming up in this forum lately and frequently so must be their time of year. ;))) barb
