According to Michael Dirr in Manual of Woody Landscape Plants, the 'Pendula' cultivar of Styrax japonica is small and reaches only 10-12 feet in height. It would grow 9-10 feet in 10years spreading to the same width as height. It is a dainty graceful tree with attractive gray-brown bark with interlacing fissures and irregular tan coloured areas. Flowers are bell-shaped, white with yellow stamens born on 2-4cm. stalks which are in groups of 3-6 attached to lateral shoots. They occur in May-June and produce a dry ovoid drupe about a centimeter long and containing a single brown seed which falls with the approach of winter. Leaves are darker green turning yellow in fall. They are hardy in zones 5-8 and prefer soil which is acid, well-drained but moist, and abundant with organic matter. They are amazingly free of pests and disease.
