There are one or two weed-like tree species that are popping up everywhere in my backyard...there are dozens over a week or two period. I pulled one out an it's attached to an inch thick root system that runs like a network throughout my backyard. It actually grew beneath the concrete and re-surfaced in a garden bed.

Can anyone a) identify these trees, and b) tell me how to eradicate them?

    Help! I've attached photos.

It might be a Black Cottonwood. Is/was there one growing nearby? If the parent tree is still alive and not in your property, there is nothing simple that you can do about it.

I was afraid you would say that...yes there are Black Cottonwood nearby. I suppose I'll just have to rip them out one by one and tear up the root network.
