weed identification

    can anyone tell me what this weed is, it grows in my lawn ,heaviest around the edges. it grows tight to the soil, is vey strong and dense and i can't get rid of it or even identify it.

    Looks like either a Liverwort or Lichen.

    Liverwort (a moss relative). To be rid of it, improve the soil drainage. It likes growing on heavily compacted, badly drained soil.

    It's a species of liverwort....You must live in a REALLY wet climate for it to be so successful in your lawn! Similar to moss, you can only achieve temporary eradication unless you change the growing conditions (more sun, less water, etc.). Fertilizing also helps.
