I have a few questions about growing water Iris in Vancouver (Pacific Northwest): 1. What are some hardy (non-invasive) varieties of water Iris? I am thinking about using the Iris laevigata 'Royal Cartwheel', but would like to learn about other varieties. 2. Will water Iris survive dry conditions for a month or two in the summer? Or do they need constant moisture. The proposed planting location I have in mind is adjacent to a stream that will flow all summer long, but the stream will slow to a trickle during the dry months. There might not be much moisture up on the planting bench adjacent to the stream. 3. How much maintenance do the water Iris need once they get established? 4. How many years can we expect an area of water Iris to live in a low-maintenance condition before they need to be pulled up and started over? 5. Any plant combination suggestions to go with the water Iris would be greatly appreciated.
The only one you have to worry about weediness with is Iris pseudacorus. Otherwise, displays of water garden plants at local independent garden centers and pond plant specialty nurseries include various suitable irises.
