I am working on centerpieces for a charity fundraiser, and we are talking about draping Wandering Jew over the sides of fish bowls with gold fish in them. I am hoping someone can reassure me that having the ends of Wandering Jew in the water for a day won't hurt the fish any - or warn me that this is a bad idea before I try it! Thanks.
Welcome to the Forum, fellow Buckeye! So far as I know, Tradescantia should pose no problems for the goldfish. (They may nibble at it, though.) Would be more concerned with the temp. of water, oxygen and chlorine levels, etc. Have read that spiderwort leaves are mildly irritating to human skin, but think you should be OK with household wandering j. Would be interested to see a photo of your centerpieces. What variety of plant will you use? Hope that you will retain, root, and plant the cuttings! Another question: after the event, what will become of the fish?
I've planted Tradescantia and Spider Plants in bowls containing Beta fish before, with no ill effects to either the fish or the plants (although Togata is right, they will nibble the roots a bit.) I can't see Goldfish being any different, and they're probably a better choice for this kind of thing because they're adapted to live in low-oxygen environments. Also like Togata, I'm very curious to see photos of the centerpieces, as well as to know what will become of the fish and plants after the event.
