I want to know if walnut trees will grow in zone 3 at 3200 feet elevation (on a mountain near Grand Forks, BC). I can plant it next to a year-round pond and creek. Does anyone know if they survive here?

What kind of walnut? English walnut (J. regia) is a bust (though J. regia 'Carpathian' may be worth a try?), you should have success with Butternut (J. cinerea) and Black Walnut may be borderline (J. nigra).

With many hardwoods, they need a long, hot frost free growing season to both ripen the nuts and the wood in preparation for winter. If the wood isn't sufficiently ripe, you won't get the hardiness advertised for the species.
