Hello, I was hoping someone could help me identify this little volunteer shrub. It is growing on a semi-wooded hillside on Whidbey Island in Washington State. It stands about 18" at the moment, about 4 stems coming off of a central stalk. The deer haven't eaten it yet (it is surrounded by alders, trailing blackberry, fringecup, elderberry seedling, etc.). Sorry I don't have a clearer photo but it was taken very quickly; I"m hoping the distinctive leaf shape will give you a clue - they're about 2 - 3" in length.

Thank you for any assistance you can provide.

    Cheers,
    Lizzy

Judging by the leaf shape I would say that it's some sort of Crataegus.

Common hawthorn (C. monogyna) is an abundant weed in this region, has this leaf shape.

Thank you, Ron. I have a very large hedgerow to create, and this will be an addition to it.
