A couple of these plants have arrived in my too shaded cedar hedge. Location: Ottawa, Ontario Anyone know what they are? Richard
Looks like Prunus. Considering where this is, it's probably a bird deposited pit or a root sprout from a nearby tree. I couldn't tell you what species from the foliage.
Re: Volunteer tree? - Prunus? Thanks smivies, I have grown a couple of different types of cherry over the years but they have quite different leaves. One obvious possibility is Nanking Cherry (Prunus Tomentosa) as my neighbour is growing a bunch. Their leaves have a similar texture but a quite different shape - see attached. I have also included another photo of the mystery plant, this tame taken with a flash. I guess I could wait for the plant to fruit ;-) r.
