I found this volunteer growing near my Cryptomeria 'Black Dragon'. You can see that it is right next to a 'Silver Sword' azalea. Is this a Crypromeria? Would they naturally reproduce in northwest Indiana? The attached images include the first from 7 July 2006 CST, and the last two are from 24 August 2006 CST.
Looks more like a Juniper, possibly J. scopulorum exhibiting juvenile foliage? Not unusual to have Juniper volunteers as the birds love the 'berries'. Simon
I was wondering if it was maybe that. I don't have a cone producing juniper nearby, but maybe a bird pooped a seed there.
