    Hey guys,

So about two weeks ago I planted a new Sango Kaku JM. Now I've decided to add some companion plants beside my Sango Kaku so I've started to dig around it. I was surprised to see so many of these grub-like things which I've later determined to be vine weevil larvas. I think I've found approximately 5 of these larvaes in a 4 ftsq area. (it weird because when I was digging a hole for my Sango kaku I didn't find any)

Anyway should I be concerned that I've found these weevil larvas within 2 ft from the trunk of my Sango Kaku? That's quite close for comfort. I also should mention there's a small tree stump from a tree that was chopped down about 10 years ago, I'm not sure if the stump is the reason why there's so many weevil larvas as they like roots apparently.

I've attached a pic for you guys to verify that these grub-like things are in fact weevils. Also attached is the before pic; the weevil larvas were found just outside of the mulched area beneath the grass as thats where I was digging. You can judge how close they are to the Sango Kaku.

Should I continue digging until I see no more weevil larvas?

Edit: thanks to the posters below, it looks to be like these grubs are chafer larvas instead

Check out May or June bug larvae or chafer larvae and see if that matches more closely than vine weevils. Hard to tell from the picture but they look more like the larvae of some kind of chafer than that of a vine weevil. These pests are also root eaters, but more likely to be a problem for the turf than the tree.

Root weevils in general are mostly only problematic for maples in container culture.

Maf is correct in that it is some other type of white grub, but cannot tell from this picture which one. Vine weevil grubs are legless.

I once saw what I took to be Japanese beetles on a tree branch in Vancouver's Queen Elizabeth Park.

Thanks guys for the responses. That really helps.

So yes it looks to be more like chafer larvae instead. I'm slightly relieved but I still don't like what I see.
